James Christopher Hobner

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of James Christopher Hobner, a man of fiery ambition and steadfast patience, who departed on the fifth of May in 2026. He was the devoted father to Jessica; loving brother to John and Katherine; and caring and supportive friend to many. Through his journey of 67 years, he touched quite a few lives, sparking laughter and motivating others with his infectious energy, enthusiasm, and unwavering perseverance. Born August 20, 1958, Jim had a fierce passion for life, and for the finer things it offered. He loved the outdoors—camping, hiking, skiing, being out on the water. He wanted a big, beautiful home with plenty of land so his daughter could ride horses, and a horizon filled with mountains and fire in the sky; but instead, contentedly settled on a pier on the Susquehanna with canvas-worthy sunsets. His perfect retirement plan was to buy a little boat, put it in the water, and sail away. Driven by an endless thirst for knowledge and success—and a certain stubbornness—Jim's lifelong learning had no restraints. He soaked up everything he could if he thought it would help him elevate his life, which often led to him turning to unusual money-making ventures; however, it also provided him with a jack-of-all-trades status. Anything you needed advice about or help with—Jim had a solution. Ever the problem solver, fixing your issue was his way of saying, "I care for you." Jim's favorite time of year was Christmas. He would have lived it all year long if he could. For him, it was all about nostalgia. The beauty of the lights and the colorful decorations were a part of it too, but Jim loved coming home to his family to share the magic, the hope, and the love that the holidays had always offered him. His most cherished possessions were his Christmas decorations, handed down from earlier generations. Surrounding himself with hand-me-downs was Jim's way of preserving those precious memories: a home remembered by a resilient child. Resiliency was just his way of life. He tried, he failed, he got back up and tried again. He honored the legacies of his parents and grandparents and kept them alive in his heart, even when the deep ache of loss came creeping back in. He never failed to dust off the picture frames, bake cookies from that handed-down recipe, or tend to the symbolic living shrine he had cultivated over the years. This was his most important lesson he could pass on; the crown jewel passed from one resilient child to another. Jim's legacy of perseverance, ambition, playfulness, and continuous learning will be carried on by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His remarkable life will serve as a testament to the power of an indomitable spirit, ever eager to lend a helping hand, a shoulder to lean on, and a smile to light up your day. He will be greatly missed, wholeheartedly cherished, and forever remembered. A prayer service to celebrate and honor Jim's life will be held on May 30, 2026 at 10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 8420 Belair Rd, Nottingham, MD 21236. We invite all who knew and loved Jim to join us in honoring his memory. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make donations to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), the Brain Injury Recovery Foundation, and/or the Mind Your Brain Foundation, who support brain injuries, especially those resulting from medical errors, and provide advocacy, rehabilitation, and financial aid to patients and their families. We feel that this is the best way to honor Jim's memory and to help keep other families from experiencing this same anguish.
