Herbert Murphy

Herbert L. Murphy Jr. was born on May 10, 1959, to Herbert L. Murphy, Sr., and Annie Shaw. From infancy, he was lovingly raised by grandparents, Roosevelt, and Clodis Murphy, who affectionately nicknamed him “Little Brother.” At an early age, Her accepted Christ as this Lord and Savior, a faith that remained an anchor throughout his life. “Little Brother” grew up in a large and loving household surrounded by family, including MiMi, Edward, Roosevelt Jr., Melvin, and Marcus Murphy, along with cousins Pete and Tony Holland. He was also supported by his father and stepmother, Herbert Sr. and Patricia Murphy, and his brothers Mark and Neil Murphy. Herb was raised in Maywood, Illinois, where he graduated from Proviso East High School. He later moved to Monterey, California, to live with his uncle and aunt, Don, and MiMi Malone. While in Monterey, Herb enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served two tours in Germany. During his time in service, he was also able to visit one of his favorite countries, Panama. After his military service, Herb relocated to South Bend, Indiana, where he was employed by the University of Notre Dame. It was there that he met and married Christine “Chris” Murphy, the love of his life. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three children” Justin Holmquest, Daniel Holmquest, and Tagan Holmquest. Herbert Murphy was a selfless man who devoted his life to making others feel happy, welcomed, and safe. He never let anyone leave his home hungry and found joy in feeding family and friends whenever they visited. His kindness, paired with his playful spirit, lit up every room he entered. He was truly one of a kind—a man whose presence made life better for those around him. He transitioned from this life on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the age of 66. He is survived by devoted wife, Christine Murphy; his children, Justin Holmquest, Daniel Holmquest, and Tagan Holmquest; his cherished grandchildren: Alayah Dillard, Keera Green, Pierceton Gabe Green Jr., Parker Holmquest, Levi Holmquest, Piper Holmquest, and Ezra Holmquest. Also remembering him with love are one aunt and two brothers, along with a host of extended family and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
