Elizabeth Margaret Houchen

Elizabeth "Betty" Houchen died peacefully on March 6, 2022 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, May 15, 1942, Betty was the daughter of the late Anna Wise. In addition to her mother, Betty was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Karl Houchen, her beloved daughter, Karen Houchen and many other family members. Betty is survived by daughters Kimberly (David) Bennett and Karlene (Christopher) Jennings and son Kip (Shannon) Houchen; her cherished grandchildren David (Tina) Bennett, Michael (Katie) Shearer, Lauren (Brian) McDaniel, Kalena (Joseph) Becker, Cal Houchen, Kaylyn Jennings, Kelsey Jennings, Jake Houchen and Dylan Houchen and her treasured great-grandchildren, Chase Bennett, Madelyn Bennett, Grayson Becker and Maddox Becker. In addition, she is survived by her sisters, Anna Liedy, Colleen Shojamanesh and Lillian Steinacker. Betty grew up in Baltimore alongside her life-long best friend Carolyn "Suey" Kopec. After she and Karl married, they started a family and moved to Delaware in 1967. Family always came first for Betty, whether it be sewing matching clothing for her four children, planning elaborate Halloween haunted house birthday parties, baking the most delicious desserts for everyone or attending her grandchildrens' sporting events. She once said she was a caregiver- that was her role. She cared for everyone and helped anyone who asked or needed help. She was also the ultimate home decorator and organizer- whether it be painting, stenciling, wallpapering or knocking down a wall when Karl went backpacking- nothing held her back. She loved holidays especially Christmas and her decorating and baking skills in that regard were unparalleled. We were all spoiled by her in more ways than can be counted, especially Karlene and her family with whom she lived with for the last 20 plus years after Karl passed.
