Vedette Alexis Hull

When peace like a river, attendeth my way When sorrow like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well, with my soul. Vedette Alexis Hull was born in Turners Station, Maryland on Sunday, November 12, 1950. She peacefully entered into Eternal Rest on Monday, February 17, 2020, at the Pleasant Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Baltimore, Maryland where she had been in hospice care. Vedette was the eldest of the three children of James Alexander Hull, Sr and Helena Lillian Cornish Hull. She was educated in the public schools of Baltimore City and was a 1968 graduate of Edmondson High School. As a child, Vedette was a member of the International Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows. As an adult she was a member of the Prince Hall Order of The Eastern Star. She was an active member of Electra Chapter #1 and earned the authority of Matron. After graduating from Edmondson, Vedette’s first job was at the Sun Life Insurance Company of America. Afterward she was employed at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, UMBC —affectionately called “U Must Be Crazy” by Vedette — for 31 years until her health forced her to retire as a supervisor in the Registrar’s Office. Vedette was a doting mother to Aiesha. Her grandson Zion was the light of her life. He was her undisputed pride and joy. She also loved her nieces and nephews and relished being called “Aunt Dette.” Vedette had a beautiful singing voice. She was a member of the Senior Choir at Bethel AME Church as was her maternal grandmother and mother. Her sister, Gail, still sings on the choir. Vedette also was a member of Bethel’s Imani Messengers and Mass Choir. Vedette enjoyed getting her hair done and her nails “did.” She enjoyed a good burger and loved root beer floats. She liked to go shopping, especially at the Arundel Mills Mall. She brought so much staff at Pleasant Gardens banned her from buying anything else! Mind you, she didn’t just buy for herself. She brought Lego sets for Zion and gifts for her housemates at Pleasant Gardens. She made sure her housemates ate well too. She would buy food for the group’s Super Bowl parties and other special occasions. She also enjoyed going to the movies and going out to eat. Cream of Crab Soup with sherry on top from the Sunset Restaurant & Lounge or Pappas Restaurant & Sports Bar was her favorite. Vedette liked to travel. Unfortunately, illness prevented her from traveling as much as she would have liked. She was predeceased by her parents and brother James Alexander Hull, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Aiesha Michelle Lewis, grandson, Zion James William Lewis, sister Gail H. Owens, nieces Laurise Owens and Tenesha Hull, nephew Wayne Owens, Jr, great-nephew, Isaiah Owens and great-niece, Mariah Owens and a host of other family and friends. Footprints in the Sand One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord. After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you Never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you."
