Susan "Sue" Hickman

In Loving Memory of Susan “Sue” Hickman December 23, 1944 – September 15, 2025 Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Susan “Sue” Hickman, passed away peacefully at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Towson, Maryland, on September 15, 2025, at 11:34 p.m., after a courageous two-year battle with the most aggressive form of breast cancer. She was 80 years old. Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Sue spent much of her childhood in Lutherville, Maryland. She graduated from the University of Maryland and went on to dedicate over 20 years to teaching and serving as an administrator at Children’s House Montessori School. Her passion for education and unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds touched countless lives. She was married to the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Hickman, USAF Captain and owner of The H. Chambers Company in Baltimore, Maryland, for 57 years. Together they built a beautiful life centered on love and family. She was the proud and devoted mother of Casey Simpson and Sally Langrill (husband Ethan Langrill), and the adoring Nana of Grace, Jake, and Ryder. Nine years ago, after living in Columbia, Maryland for 44 years, Sue and Bob semi-retired to Miller’s Grant in Ellicott City, Maryland, where they quickly became beloved members of the community. They forged deep friendships that became like family, adding another circle of love and support to their lives. Sue was the heart and soul of her family — fiercely loyal, endlessly supportive, and always ready to celebrate every milestone. She was incredibly bright, witty, and articulate. She loved writing and was the co-editor of the Thoughts and Things publication at Miller’s Grant, along with her weekly prose column What’s Good. She also penned her own novel, poems, and short stories. In addition, she was an accessory consultant to The H. Chambers Company in Baltimore, Maryland. She was also passionate about giving back, supporting numerous causes close to her heart, including local food banks and domestic violence shelters. Sue loved watching football, spending time with her grandchildren, and sharing meaningful conversations with those she loved. Her quick wit and unmatched sense of humor brought light and laughter to everyone around her. She faced life’s challenges with grace and determination, and even in her final days, she fought to hold on for more time with her family. While her passing leaves an ache that cannot be measured, her family finds comfort in knowing she is free from pain and at peace. Her love, wisdom, and strength will remain a guiding force for all who were blessed to know her. A private celebration of life will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Sue by sharing a laugh, lifting someone up, or holding your loved ones just a little closer — just as she always did.
