Robert Woodruff Owers

Robert "Bob" Owers, beloved husband, father, brother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2nd, surrounded by his loving family. Bob's life was a testament to his unwavering devotion to God, family, and community. Born and raised in western Massachusetts, Bob initially resisted the family's move to Florida at the age of 12, but he eventually embraced his new home, even joining his school’s band playing tuba, for which he would win numerous accolades throughout his high school and college years at Florida State University. He earned his MBA from Florida International University. During the Vietnam War, Bob dutifully served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Okinawa and Thailand as an inspector, auditor and project coordinator. Following his military service, Bob returned to South Florida, where he met and married the love of his life, Allyson Gum. Together, they adopted their cherished daughter, Jennifer, and were dedicated members of Riverside Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. Bob's professional journey included administrative roles with Eastern Airlines and Jackson Memorial Hospital. However, his career was just one facet of his fulfilling life. He was committed to serving God with intention. He was devoted to serving in Gideons International which focuses on spreading the Word of God to all nations, taught Sunday School (children and adults), led Bible Studies, and engaged in many other outreach and community activities. He was also a deacon at Riverside Baptist Church. Upon retirement, Bob and Allyson relocated to Maryland to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law, Scott Cassidy. His warm spirit, generous heart, unwavering faith and dry humor touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Bob will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he enriched. His legacy of love, faith and service will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Though he has departed this world, Bob's light will shine on in the hearts of those who loved him dearly. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Gideons International (P.O. Box 1865, Rockville, MD), Riverside Baptist Church (10775 S.W. 104 Street, Miami, FL 33176), Redland Baptist Church in support of Grace in Store (6922 Muncaster Mill Road, Derwood, MD 20835), or Asbury Foundation in support of Benevolent Care at Asbury Methodist Village (201 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877) in Bob's memory. A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be held at The Guild Chapel at Asbury Methodist Village (entrance via 301 Odendhal Ave.) on May 31, 2024 at 11:00 am and at Riverside Baptist Church, 10775 SW 104 St., in Miami on October 10, 2024 at 6:00 pm.
