Patrick Joseph Painter, Jr.

Born in Washington, DC in 1947, PJ was the oldest of 4 siblings. He grew up in Landover Hills, MD where he attended St Mary’s Catholic School through the 8th grade, then attended St Anthony’s Catholic High School in Washington, DC. In January of 1967 he met the love of his life Leigh and 3 years later they married and started their beautiful family. His personality and sense of humor were the staple of his 50-year career in sales (office supplies and office furniture). PJ spent much of the 70’s and 80’s coaching his children’s sports teams. He was always the funny guy with the jokes, the life of the party and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends watching The Redskins, playing softball, or just hanging out in the yard and BBQ’ing. While raising their family in the 80’s, PJ and Leigh became foster parents to countless children in need of a place to stay, sometimes for a day, and others for forever. Later in life he developed a love for photography, gardening and watch repair. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick J. Painter Sr. and Edythe Painter and his loving son Christopher Ryan Painter. He is survived by his loving wife Leigh, of almost 54 years, his children Kristen Painter (Cindy) of Fresno, CA, Patrick Painter of Bowie, MD, Stephanie Painter (Matt) of Berlin, MD, Drew Painter (Lindsey) of Glen Ridge, NJ, Julie Keys (Justin) of Grasonville, MD, Joshua Painter (Alex) of Halethorpe, MD, his grandchildren Gage Wiles, Dillon Painter, Jackson Painter, Lorelei Painter, Phoenix Painter and Ryleigh Keys, his siblings James Painter, Edie Preston, Judy Powers, countless nieces/nephews, sister/brother in laws and his brothers and sisters in recovery. PJ went by many names and wore many hats. Most notably, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, poppy, coach, sponsor, mentor, but most importantly if you called him friend, you were a better person because PJ was in your life. In lieu of flowers, please consider an act of kindness in PJ’s name. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Chapel up the hill) 16501 Annapolis Rd Bowie, MD 20715 at 12pm on Saturday October 28th, 2023. Immediately following please join us for a Celebration of Life at The Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department 125 Crescent Rd, Greenbelt MD 20770 from 1-3:30
