Nancy Michel

Nancy Michel, loving daughter, mother, grandmother, wife, companion, and friend to so many, 72, of Baltimore, MD, passed away on Friday August 19, 2016. She was a mother to everyone she met, always taking care of others until the very end. Her enthusiasm and love of life was contagious, and her infectious smile and laughter lit up any room. She was independent, opinionated, resilient and complicated, and always made those around her think more deeply. Nancy was born on July 28, 1944 in Norwood, MA, to an Irish Catholic family and moved to Gaithersburg, MD in 1970. She was a spiritual person who was tolerant, understanding, and accepting of others. She felt strongly about social and political causes in which she believed, and was a political activist in her younger years. Nancy was an artist from the day she was born, channeling her creativity in many ways throughout her life. She graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and spent many years as an independent artist. For the past 21 years, she was the Director of Marketing for Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Columbia, MD. Holidays were especially important to Nancy, and she loved to see the Hampden 34th Street lights - she also especially loved the alien on Howard Street. She loved her coffee and brunch, her rum & cokes, and her gin & tonics. She loved animals, fresh flowers, reading novels (her favorite authors were John Irving, Laura Lippmann, and Stephen King), horror movies, and her Irish heritage. Nancy accomplished much in her time on this earth, and lived a life full of adventure. She is preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Elinor O'Brien, her dogs Ben and Forbes, and her cats Timber and Karana. She is survived by her longtime companion, Irwin Foster; her children and their spouses, Rob and Susan Michel, Meredith and Scott Collack, and Jack and Nicole Michel; her ex-husband Bob Michel; and her beloved grandchildren Alex, Gabby, and Lucas Michel, and Nathan Collack, as well as her dog, Murphy. In true Nancy fashion, she asked us to not hold a funeral or viewing. The family asks that friends remember her by sharing stories via social media or by reaching out to them.
