Mary Ann Laing

Mary Ann Laing, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated community advocate, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on June 29, 1952, Mary Ann's life was a rich tapestry of faith, family, and service, leaving a profound legacy of love and inspiration. Mary Ann was the devoted wife of William E. Laing III, with whom she celebrated a fulfilling 51-year marriage. Their deep and enduring partnership was a testament to their mutual respect and love. Mary Ann was a nurturing and supportive mother to Richard Laing (Lora), Mark Laing, Cheryl Laing, James Laing, and Carol Shaffer (Michael). Her children were the heart of her world, and she provided them with a foundation of love, wisdom, and guidance. She was a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren and great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren. Her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother was a source of immense happiness, and she cherished every moment with her beloved family. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her brothers Charles O'Neil, Gregory O'Neil, and Michael O'Neil. She is survived by her loving brothers Paul O'Neil, James O'Neil, and Daniel O'Neil, who will miss her dearly. Mary Ann’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her spiritual beliefs provided her with strength and comfort and guided her actions in all aspects of her life. She found great fulfillment in her active participation in her church community. In her professional life, Mary Ann began as a bookkeeper while working with several non-profit organizations, including the Catonsville Food Ministry, the Enterprise Foundation, and Maryland Works. Her dedication to these causes reflected her deep commitment to helping others and improving her community. Mary Ann’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish her own business, Money Minder, where her expertise and personal touch continued to make a difference. In 2008, she was honored as one of the Top 100 MBEs (Minority and Women Entrepreneurs), recognizing her exceptional achievements and leadership. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 7th, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Catholic Community at Relay. A Memorial Mass will follow at 3:30 p.m. with a gathering and light fare afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary Ann’s memory to Southwest Emergency Services (SWES), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help families in need. Mary Ann Laing’s legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing her.
