Leonard John Dean

Leonard John Dean (84) of Ellicott City passed away on May 9, 2020 in his home with his son and daughter by his side. He was born to his parents (Clarence and Arline Dean) on December 15, 1935 in Rochester, NY. Len was proud of his educational achievements by earning a scholarship to the General Motors Institute, Mechanical Engineering program and completing his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the State University of New York Empire State College. Len began his career as a draftsman. From there he progressed his successful career as manufacturing engineer, manufacturing program manager, product development manager, and manufacturing operations manager at various aerospace and defense companies including Hughes Aircraft, General Dynamics and General Electric. Len retired in 1998 as Senior Engineer and Chairman of the U.S. Navy Standard Missile Correlation Task Group at The Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory. Len was known for his love of fishing the streams and rivers of upstate New York, California and Maryland. He was most at home on a dance floor enjoying various genres of live music including ballroom and country while dancing the waltz, cha-cha, and swing. Len enjoyed many years of softball and bowling leagues along with singing in a mens’ choir. He loved to joke around with his family and friends and was always the man to shake hands and talk with the most people at a social gathering. Len was a very optimistic, strong, and caring man who worked hard, knew how to enjoy life, and loved his family deeply. Len is survived by his Son, Steven Dean; Daughter, Stacy Saghirian and her husband Scott; Grandchildren, Anna and Alex Saghirian; Brother, Rev. Harry Dean; Sister, Monica Williamson; and many caring nieces and nephews. Len was predeceased by his wife and the mother of his two children, Karen Dean. Len is also survived by his loving friend and companion, Lin Bedsaul, who made many fond memories throughout their years together and into his final days. They enjoyed laughing, dancing and fun times with friends at the many social groups they belonged to.
