Kathleen Anne Garlington June 23, 1955 – March 13, 2017 Kathleen Anne Garlington passed away peacefully on March 13, 2017. She was 61 years old. She is survived by her 5 siblings and their spouses, Mary Garlington and Tony Sartori of Baltimore, Maryland, Monica Garlington of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Therese and Tim Hyde of Los Angeles California, Maureen and Jay Maher of Newtown, Connecticut and (Wm.) Joseph and Gretchen Garlington of Leesburg, Virginia; 9 Nieces and Nephews: Anthony Sartori; Francis, Liam & Patrick Hyde; Michael, Sean & Emily Maher; and Katherine & Elizabeth Garlington; 10 cousins: John Doran Garlington; Lee, Jane, Amy (dec.) and John Garlington; John, Mary Elizabeth, Patrick, Roberta, Katie and Michael Roys; her Aunt & Uncle, Betty & Gene Roys; and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. & Shirley Garlington; and grandparents, John & Ellen Waters and John Doran and Hazel Garlington. Kathleen began playing piano at age 12, studying with Joan Boucher, PhD, with whom she learned to sight-read music. She could read and perform music placed before her without preparation. She regularly performed recitals during that time privately and at St. Cecelia’s Music Society. She attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Muskegon, Michigan to study piano for several summers during high school and accompanied their ballet classes while in attendance. In addition, she studied at the prestigious Chautauqua Summer Piano program in Chautauqua, NY. Since high school and forward, for over 30 years, Kathleen played the organ and piano for Church Masses, services and programs in both Michigan and Washington, DC. Kathleen attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC to pursue her degree in music. She transferred to George Washington University when her professor, Ms. Novak, transferred, and graduated with a BA in Music/Performance. For many years Kathleen studied jazz piano with Ms. Jean Marie Butler in Washington, D.C. and classical piano, theory and performance studies by commuting to Philadelphia to study with a former protégé of Franz Liszt. She accompanied the students in the local ballet schools and also worked as an accompanist for vocalists and instrumentalists. She later taught piano lessons to children when she returned to Michigan in her later years until her parents passed away. Kathleen enjoyed reading the newsworthy current events and stories concerning the arts. She was known for her Sunday tradition of reading the New York Times Sunday Paper from front to back. She attended all types of musical concerts and programs as well as the theater. Kathleen was proud of her Irish heritage. She loved her family, her friends and her Irish Catholic upbringing. She was passionate about dogs and all animals, receiving unconditional love from them throughout her life. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her openheartedness and “giving you the shirt off her back” attitude. Kathleen’s family and friends will celebrate a Funeral Mass on Monday, April 3rd at 11:00 a.m.in the Chapel at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 11701 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20878, Rev.
