Barbara Bea Broadbent

Barbara B. Broadbent of Reisterstown, MD passed away on September 25, 2023 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She was 80 years of age. Born in Suitland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Irving F. and Beatrice M. (White) Petschke. She is survived by her son, Ken Broadbent, and his wife, Alison, of Arlington, VA; by her daughter, Sandy Tilmes, and her husband, Matt, of Hanover, PA, and by her four grandchildren Ben and Lexie Tilmes, and Everett and Katerina Broadbent. She is also survived by her partner of 15 years, Robert Trout. Barb was a graduate of Suitland High School, class of 1961. While growing up, she enjoyed trips to Rhode Island to visit her extended family, especially boating with Uncle Ray and Aunt Glady; spending summers with friends swimming and water skiing on the Eastern Shore of MD, and she was a Past Honored Queen in Job’s Daughter for Bethel #5 in Washington, D.C. Following high school, Barb attended Western Maryland College (WMC), now known as McDaniel College. She graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Education with a minor in Biology in 1965. She was a class officer, a member of the SGA, the Vice President of the Women’s Athletic Association, a member of the Honor Court, a Trumpeter, and a member of Sigma Sigma Tau sorority. It is there she met Streett Broadbent, to whom she was married, and is the father of Ken and Sandy. Barb was a physical education teacher for Baltimore County Public Schools and she retired from teaching at Franklin Middle School in 2008. While teaching, she earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Towson State College. Outside of work, Barb was an active member of the Jaycettes, volunteering around the community. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, playing various card games, and reading and attending book club. She was a Scout mom for both Ken and Sandy, and held numerous PTA Board positions at the elementary and middle schools. Regardless of her activities and work, her top priority was sharing in the lives of her family and friends. A Celebration of Life celebration will be held at Reisterstown United Methodist Church, 246 Main St, Reisterstown, MD 21136 on Saturday, October 21, 2023. The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Celebration of Life will begin at 12 p.m. in the Sanctuary. A reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall from 1 p.m. t0 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to McDaniel College (Westminster, MD) in support of “The Fund for McDaniel” in memory of Barbara Broadbent.
