Alberto de Guzman Directo

Alberto “Bert” de Guzman Directo of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 25, 2025 at MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. A memorial service & mass will take place at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church at 8215 Reservoir Dr., Houston, Texas 77049 on Monday, September 29th at 9am officiated by his brother-in-law, Rev. Fr. Lazaro Hortaleza. His ashes will be interred at San Jacinto Memorial Park and Funeral Home at 14659 East Fwy, Houston, TX 77015 at 11am. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at Golden Corral Buffet & Grill at 14010 East Fwy I-10, Houston, TX 77015 at 1pm. Born in Bigbiga, La Union in the Philippines, on November 15th, 1950, Alberto began his career as a merchant marine. He came to the U.S. in 1987, first living in Sweetwater, Texas. He later worked as a maintenance engineer in Irving and Beaumont, TX. His career continued in Houston, TX for 17 years at East Houston Regional Medical Center. While working at the hospital, he worked in every part of the building and knew people who worked in every department. Having a generous spirit of service, he carried people’s belongings to and from their cars and helped them if they had car trouble. When he had a stroke in December 2005 and ran out of leave, employees across the hospital donated the equivalent of four months in Paid Time Off. People brought gifts of cake, cash, and even fish. Alberto was preceded in death by his brothers, Abe and Reynaldo, his father, Pacifico, his mother, Elena, and Inang Baket, who cared for him as a child. Alberto is survived by his wife, Rebecca, his son, Adonis, his daughter, Rachel, his son-in-law, Alexander, his brothers, Diosdado and Floriano, and his sisters, Jean and Cleovin. He was a loving husband; it would have been Alberto & Rebecca’s 50th wedding anniversary on September 28th. In order to honor the date of their anniversary, they have selected to have the memorial on September 29th. In Beaumont and Houston, he used to sing at parties for the Filipino community and especially enjoyed singing the hits of Elvis Presley. He had his own karaoke system at home and often sang songs after dinner. Bert loved gardening and helping fix his friends’ houses. An avid driver, he delighted in bringing his wife and in-laws to the casino. Alberto is fondly remembered for how much he loved eating Ilocano dishes such as papaitan & dinengdeng. Recently, when Rebecca used to ask him if he had done his exercises, he playfully used to say, “Do I need to call you when I do them?” because he had already done them while she was not watching. When Rebecca used to help him to stretch, he proclaimed, “Aray! Aray!” Alberto will be forever remembered for his playful humor.
